NH Sicherung: A Critical Protection Component in Industrial Electrical Systems

Electrical protection for people and equipment, as well as protecting distribution systems from faults, is essential in any industrial power distribution system.
You’ve probably come across German architectural terms in your electrical documentation/maintenance manuals and on drawings for industrial projects across Germany and the rest of Europe. Let’s look at these German terms to help engineers make their systems safer and more robust.
What Is an NH Sicherung?
An NH Sicherung (Niederspannungs-Hochleistungs-Sicherung ) is a low-voltage high-performance fuse protecting our final circuits from overloads and short-circuits. They are often used in factories and similar applications as they can interrupt fault currents having values of many tens of thousands of Amp’s. NH Sicherungen are designed for demanding applications (so you won’t find one in the kitchen of your house!). They are often found in switchgear and can be found residing in the cabinets of power distribution units, motor control centers, and transformer protection. Each NH Sicherung does just one job and has a rather simple operating process. When too much current flows for too long through the circuit the fuse element melts and cut off the faulty circuit before damage can take place.
Why Are NH Sicherungen Important?
Our modern facilities generally rely on the stable distribution of electrical power. Even a seemingly insignificant electrical fault may happen destructive to equipment, bring production to a halt, or pose a serious risk to safety.NH Sicherungen provide:

  • High breaking capacity
  • Rapid fault interruption
  • Reliable overload safety
  • Minimal service requirements
  • Long-lasting service
With these advantages, NH fuses are among the most widely used in manufactories, renewable power stations, and public supply networks.
What is Sicherung Englisch and Sicherung Englisch Strom?
What most non-German engineers wonder is Sicherung Englisch when presented with a technical text in German. Basically Sicherung means fuse and protection in English, depending on the context.
Sicherung Englisch Strom is similar. In other words, it means the electrical definition of:
  • Fuse
  • Electrical fuse
  • Protection device
Correct translation is critical if you order components, read technology specs or deal with worldwide manufacturers/suppliers.
NH Sicherung and FI Schalter and Their Connection
A commonly encountered German electrical word is: FI Schalter. This stands for a residual current or earth fault device or what some term a ditto breaker.
FH Sicherungen and FI Schalter are both related to electrical safety. Their purposes are very different though. The NH Fuse protects equipment from:—
  • Short circuit
  • Overcurrent
    •Fault current
    An FI Schalter protects from:—
  • Electric shock
  • Ground leakage currents
  • Insulation failures
For maximum cover many factories/installation use the system design of both. The NH fuse protects equipment, while the FI Schalter protects personnel.
    The Sicherungskasten
Sicherungskasten is German for fuse box, distribution board or electrical panel. In the industrial halls, the Sicherungskasten is where the various devices for protection are housed and laid out. There may be:NH Sicherungen miniature circuit breakersFI Schalter unitsdisconnect switchmonitoring apparatusAn intelligent layout of the Sicherungskasten greatly facilitates maintenance and aids the operator in tracing faults without delay. Increasing demands on industry make the clever planning of all touchingly patterned panels a necessary affair.
“What No Photo You Were Just Growing Wilty Fps” What do you mean “Sicherung Fliegt Raus” and why?
Between a hundred and two hundred per cent is seldom heard by the mind of the working electrician wandering ru dyum through the hall halls of the house regarding the cause of its electrical trouble. “Sicherung fliegt raus”—there! the fuse is blown. Ah, that’s more like it. We have trouble and all because of that darned fuse or circuit protecting device of some sort, that poor servant in our keeping of the current in line. nowrapWhat caused Mr. Flies or Fuse? Overload. Too much juice, a condition brought about by a faulty appliance of some sort or over services of tho electric kind. Maybe a complication in the wires, where are the brakes on the wires, either? A switchboard to be in every great embarking. Miss the growing wilty fps and have no correcting current, not a Gram, Sir. Let us go to the newspaper, or rather the news in the paper, in reality, see. What, a short, it is enough to blow the connection of any background? And a Simmons wire, you don’t care what color he is, if not do not try to do business almost instantly.Equipment FailureMotors, transformers, inverters and power supplies can also develop faults internally which produce a condition for excessive current flow.
Aging ComponentsOld or otherwise damaged electrical gear could as well be exercising it’s get out of jail card gradually, and with that a greater penchant for fuse operation.
When a Sicherung fliegt raus happens multiple times the fuse should be first inspected thoroughly as well for equipment faults rather than just being replaced in a blanket sense.
Industrial Uses for NH SicherungenNH Sicherungen have found use in a wealth of industrial applications. Some of the ares we’ve seen them employed in are noted below.
Manufacturing FacilitiesOnce again, particularly sensitive equipment all-round. NH fuses protect everything from motors to switch gear extremely well.
Renewable Energy SystemsSolar farms and other renewable energy applications such as wind power also use this type of fuse to protect inverters and any other such high current electrical devices.Battery storage sites see the same hazards, as fault currents become an inevitability on account of elements starting to chat to one another through the applications of the fruit of the integrated technology tree.
    Data Centres
Power is king and total up time is of the highest priority. Nobody wants their corral of servers to go down because of an electrical fault. NH Sicherungen make it that little bit easier to keep everyone’s data safe!
    Utility Power Networks
And finally, also seeing popular applications in substations and dieselectric distribution networks, NH fuses ensure that transformers and other feeder circuits are kept safe from nasty and damaging electrical faults.
    Choosing the Right Sicherungen
Ideal fuse material and it’s perhaps a bit of black art for the digital engineer. There are a few key criteria to be considered here relationship to selecting a suitable Sicherung:
  • Rated voltage
  • Rated current
  • Breaking capacity
  • Application type and location
  • Ambient temperature
  • Coordination with other protection devices (ie. breaker linkage etc).
Choosing the right fuse rating for a job is extremely important, in practical terms, it’s quite easily to freely size fuses for a job but entirely impractical when they continually disconnect equipment that is utterly critical.
    Digital Future, Human House
In the future sparking fires and burning transformers down become less and less of a thing thanks to NH’s liberal use of digital cost-effective, safety net technology being incorporated into their operation. This isn’t to say that technology doesn’t have a part to play protecting high value assets in our street level networks, of course some high value circuits might need NH Sicherungen of a different breaking capacity. Integrating these protection assets with smart monitoring systems, analysis and predictive maintenance solutions in the industrial internet of things (D. IoT) can give networkers the visibility they need to manage their risk more appropriately.
